It’s an icon. Hole #17 at TPC Sawgrass. This is golf’s most significant hole, included in among the 12 best Par 3 holes on the planet. It may be Nerd’s opinion, but nonetheless, spot on. This event, previously known as the Tournament Players Championship, is why there is a reserved line on your bucket list for this historical event.
In the years 1974-1987, the event was hosted by Atlanta Country Club, Colonial Country Club, Inveraray Country Club and Sawgrass Country Club. TPC Sawgrass (Stadium Course) has hosted the event since 1982. Featuring 2 very dramatic finishing holes, #17 and #18; #17, a Par 3 playing from 120 – 155 yards, and #18 from the grandstands. A hook off the tee results in a wet landing, so precision is the only option to have success on this hole.
Today, the event is known as The Players Championship, is widely considered to be the 5th Major in the golf season. Winning not only means the purse, but also receives: a five-year exemption on the PGA Tour, three-year exemptions for the U.S. Open, The Open Championship, a three-year invitation to the Masters, an exemption to the next three PGA Championship tournaments starting in 2020 and 600 points towards the FedEx Cup Race, if they’re a PGA professional.
